Out of college I had a Math degree and big dreams, but I failed to have a plan. Teaching fell in my lap as I was exploring options for my next big step. I had some connections at a school in my area. I signed up to be a substitute teacher while I continued to look for a job that would be my career job. Little did I know that I would really love teaching and would decide to go in this path and make teaching my career. Teaching is great, and I've got three reasons why I think it's so great, and my I ultimately decided to make this my lives work.
1. Teaching is comprehensive...
As the teacher in the room you have so much atonomy to make the lesson happen the way you want. Once you try teaching for some time, all other jobs feel compartmentalized. As a cashier, for example, your tasks are limited. You may have to scan items all day at one point, but as a teacher you do many, many different tasks throughout the day from writing lessons plans to lecturing, grading, mentoring, tutoring, collaborating, facilitating discussions, and so much more. The job is not as repetitive as other jobs out there. As a teacher, you do so many different things. There is never a dull moment.
2. In teaching you are surrounded by bright, younge minds...
Sometiems you meet that one students who is so brilliant, or that reveal to you that they have a specific niche where they can excel. I am always humbled by the fact that the students I teach are the future docotrs, nurses, politicians, and engineers of our world. They're contributions to the classroom culture leave a mark on my heart. The relationships you build with students is priceless and it makes the job rewarding.
3. You learn a ton...
I'm in education, so naturally, I value education and I LOVE learning. I love how much I learn on the job. I learn from my students, I learn from other staff members, and I learn from administration. I learn new skills and new technologies since I am often researching ideas for teachind specific lessons.
There are so many more reasons why teaching is great. I could continue, but these are just three that have been guiding ones for me as I've debated within myself if I wanted to pursue the career or not. I hope if you are a teacher you can relate, and if you are an outsider looking in, I hope you realize how honorable teaching is as. a career. Who knows, maybe some day you will try it for yourself? We are in fact life long learners and we are teaching of some.
